To See a World in a Grain of Sand — Mobile VR Experience is an artistic extension of installation artist Chi‑yung Wong’s large‑scale experiential work To See a World in a Grain of Sand — Mobile VR Experience (2019). Rooted in Wong’s long‑term research into mindfulness, the project continues his exploration of how artistic practice can illuminate, translate, and deepen meditative awareness. This virtual edition weaves together multimedia elements to create an immersive visual and sonic environment, inviting audiences to enter a contemplative space through a fully digital experience.

For this iteration, Wong brings the dialogue between “art and mindfulness” back to Hong Kong, collaborating with local multimedia artist Ip Kwok‑tung. Together, they reinterpret the original physical installation and its meditative concepts within a virtual framework. This cross‑disciplinary collaboration not only examines how experiential artworks can be adapted into digital form, but also fosters exchange between installation art and electronic media. The project expands the horizons of art audiences while offering an accessible entry point for the public to engage with themes of mental well‑being and mindfulness.

To See a World in a Grain of Sand — Mobile VR Experience was first commissioned in 2018 by Théâtre de Liège in Belgium and selected as one of the European Commission’s supported projects. It also received support from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. Approaching the work from a transdisciplinary perspective, Wong collaborated with Swiss psychiatrists to explore how mindfulness could be integrated into experiential installation art. In 2020, he was invited to Yale University as an Artist Research Fellow, working with scholars and specialists to examine the intersections between mental health and artistic practice.

In 2021, with support from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, he developed the second chapter of the series, One Flower One Heaven, which was later presented at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as part of a cross‑disciplinary educational initiative.
