Chi-yung Wong is a cross-disciplinary artist and curator whose work encompasses experiential installations, light installations, creative education, and cultural exchange between the arts and sciences. Through his programs and exhibitions, Chi-yung presents a range of interdisciplinary collaborations, including installations, research, publication, workshops, and seminars. These programs provide opportunities for exchange between artists, scientists, technologists, researchers, journalists, and students.

Chi-yung has been invited by various institutes in Hong Kong and Europe to host master classes and workshops for students and peers on topics including art and mental health awareness, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative education. He has also been actively involved in establishing new partnerships and fostering dialogue between Europe and Hong Kong, facilitating communication and collaboration between artists and scientists, developing artistic initiatives for mental health awareness, and supporting the implementation of education proposals that promote cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Chi-yung travels Asia and Europe, creating projects for art, cultural exchange and education with different organizations and institutes. His recent collaborators include the Theatre of Liege in Belgium, the West Kowloon Cultural Authority, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Zurich University of the Arts, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich), the Artists-in-Labs Program (Zurich), and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Design Institute, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Education University of Hong Kong (EduHK), Leisure and Cultural Services Department Hong Kong, etc.

In addition to his work as an artist and curator, Chi-yung has also served as the lighting design director for Hirsch Bedner Associates Hong Kong and as a lighting consultant for Chanel and Louis Vuitton. His expertise in lighting design, installation arts, and transdisciplinary cultural studies has allowed him to produce and create projects involving theatre lighting, architecture lighting, exhibitions, photography, and illustration.

Chi-yung holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (majoring in Theatre Lighting Design) and was the first lighting student who graduated with a First Class Honours from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He was the first Asian student to attend The Theatre Academy of Finland, taking part in an exchange program. After his graduation in 2003, he went to Paris to study French Language and Civilization in La Sorbonne Université. He then received the Alexandre Yersin scholarship from the French Consulate in Hong Kong and completed his visual arts degree at the Paris VIII Université, Saint Denis in 2006. He completed his Master of Arts in Transdisciplinary Studies in the Arts from Zurich University of the Arts in 2018. In 2020, Chi-yung Wong was selected as an Arts Fellow by Yale University due to his dedication to the field of arts and mental health.

Wong’s recent notable projects include The Tides of Time — a scenography installation inspired by the passage of time; Solis Occasus — an experiential installation exploring mindfulness; and The Tower of Light — a large‑scale light installation.

It is also worth noting that in 2016, he initiated and proposed to the French Consulate in Hong Kong the idea of presenting the city’s first light festival featuring both local and international artists. This led to the inaugural Lumiere Hong Kong Light Festival in 2017.

His site‑specific light installation The Partitions In‑between Blue, White & Red was selected as the first work by a Hong Kong artist to be presented at Le French May Festival. It was also the first artwork to make creative use of the Central Escalator, exploring cultural values and spatial possibilities within Hong Kong’s urban landscape.

(The Theatre Academy of Finland)交流的亞洲學生。

  • Wong’s recent major works push the boundaries of art and technology, including The Tides of Time — a scenography installation that uses high‑end projection to evoke the flow of time; Solis Occasus — an immersive installation informed by scientific research on mindfulness; and The Tower of Light — a large‑scale light installation that pioneers an innovative approach to achieving zero light pollution.

His site‑specific light installation The Partitions In‑between Blue, White & Red was also selected as the first work by a Hong Kong artist to be presented at Le French May Festival 2012. It was the first artwork to creatively engage the Central Escalator as a site of artistic intervention, exploring cultural values and spatial possibilities within Hong Kong’s urban landscape.

Notably, in 2016 he submitted a proposal to the French Consulate in Hong Kong advocating for the city’s first light festival featuring both local and international artists. This initiative led to the creation of Hong Kong’s inaugural light festival, Lumiere Hong Kong, in 2017.
