he Tower of Light – Heritage was created for Lumières Hong Kong Light Festival 2017, the city’s first major international light festival. The installation takes the form of a metal, dome‑like structure that reimagines the historic Time Ball Tower, once an essential navigational signal for ships entering Victoria Harbour. By bringing this long‑forgotten landmark back into public consciousness, the work reconnects audiences with a formative chapter of Hong Kong’s maritime heritage.

For this edition, Chi‑yung WONG developed a series of light projections inspired by the tower’s original purpose—guiding vessels through fog, darkness, and uncertainty. The shifting colours and gentle movements evoke the quiet vigilance of the tower, transforming its historical function into a contemporary meditation on orientation, memory, and the passage of time. Within the dome, light becomes a metaphorical compass, inviting visitors to reflect on how cities remember, forget, and reinterpret their past.

The installation employs an inward‑facing projection system using innovative colour‑mixing and LED technology. This approach creates a soft, immersive glow that envelops the viewer while producing no light pollution. Through this subtle yet evocative use of illumination, The Tower of Light – Heritage Edition offers a contemplative encounter where history is not merely recalled, but felt—gently resurfacing like a signal emerging through the mist.
