The Memories from the Tower of Light – Harbour was created with a new creative projection for the 2018 Harbour Arts Sculpture Park, Hong Kong’s first large scale international outdoor sculpture exhibition.
The work reimagines the historic Time Ball Tower, once a navigational beacon guiding ships into Victoria Harbour. Through a metal dome like structure, the installation recalls this nearly forgotten landmark and invites viewers to reconnect with the city’s maritime heritage and the layers of memory embedded along its shoreline.
For this edition, Wong Chi Yung draws inspiration from the movement of ocean waves. Using an inward facing projection system, he creates shifting fields of colour and light that echo the sea’s rhythm—its calm, its turbulence, and the delicate balance between the two. The interior becomes a meditative environment, where light flows like water and viewers encounter the quiet, hypnotic presence of the harbour.
The installation employs innovative colour mixing and LED technology to produce a soft, atmospheric glow without generating light pollution. Through this approach, Wong explores how public art can exist harmoniously within the urban landscape, offering a contemplative space that encourages reflection on history, environment, and the evolving relationship between the city and the sea.
For this edition, Chi‑yung WONG developed light projections inspired by ocean waves—their rhythm, energy, and balance between calm and turbulence. Through shifting colour and movement, the installation offers a meditative encounter that evokes the quiet, hypnotic power of the sea. The inward‑facing projection technique, achieved through innovative colour‑mixing and LED technology, creates a poetic visual experience while producing no light pollution.
