Artist Wong Chi-yung’s The Tides of Time is a scenographic installation that explores the fundamental nature of time. Inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls, the artist draws on personal experiences of loss and life’s cyclical rhythms.

Using the imagery of tides, Wong poetically alludes to the dialectical relationship between nature’s eternal rhythm and the fleeting impermanence of human life. Within the installation, thousands of fine threads are woven into a complex network, symbolising that all things have no clear beginning or end.

Through a highly poetic and immersive spatial design, the work invites viewers on a dream-like artistic journey to contemplate: in the current of human experience, how do we reflect on time, memory, and the subtle.

  • The installation "The Tides of Time"successfully bridged high-tech innovation with contemplative artistry, engaging 14,833 visitors through a transformative, multi-sensory experience.

    Technological Artistry & Reimagined Spaces

By repurposing a traditional performance venue into an immersive exhibition, the project utilized high-tech projectors to create a fluid, poetic landscape. This cross-disciplinary approach integrated light, sound, and visual art into a conceptual sanctuary, where advanced projection served as a medium to visualize the rhythmic flow of time and human connectivity.

    Inclusive Excellence & Community Engagement

A cornerstone of the project was its commitment to broad-based accessibility, successfully engaging a diverse audience spanning all age groups. By ensuring the installation was welcoming to the entire local community, the project demonstrated that sophisticated, elegant artistic value does not need to be exclusive. It maintained a high-caliber aesthetic while remaining approachable, fostering a shared cultural experience for both seasoned art enthusiasts and the general public.

    Ethical Production & Sustainability

Driven by a value-centered creative philosophy, the project prioritized environmental integrity. The installation exclusively featured recycled and non-toxic materials, ensuring the physical production mirrored its thematic focus on life cycles and preservation. This commitment to conscious design established a benchmark for responsible art-tech production.

    Public Access & Social Impact

To maximize social value and cultural access, the exhibition operated with extended hours from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. This ensured the widest possible public engagement, offering a rare, restorative resource for the community. The success of this holistic approach was reflected in the exceptional audience feedback, with 100% of surveyed visitors expressing high appreciation, confirming the installation's power to provide a high quality "artistic experience" for all.

During the visit, I spent all the time thinking of the relations among the "counting numbers" shown on the screen, the background sound effects and the imagery of tides on the ground. It's somehow mesmerizing.

This is an exhibition that allows one to relax both physically and mentally. The music, lighting, visuals, and flow all lead the audience into a relaxed mood. The interactive elements added a touch of fun. The entire exhibition is enduring and inspiring; I look forward to the next creation.

Being in the midst of it, I felt time passing by second by second. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter; joy, sorrow, and joy—no state has the privilege to control its own coming and going, nor to stay or leave by force.

Upon entering, I was attracted by the sand-like floor, the quiet lighting, and the high-contrast screen. Following the flow of text on the screen, it felt like reading a short story, unconsciously entering the world created by the artist. A very unique experience. Highly praised!

A wonderful visual art work. The music and imagery match well, allowing the audience to enjoy auditory, tactile, and visual effects simultaneously. If scents were added, there might be even more creative possibilities. Looking forward to the next work.

Growing up in Hong Kong, there isn't much space to just stop suddenly. In "The Tides of Time," I was sometimes stirred by nostalgia and sometimes felt like I was meditating. I especially liked the rearranged guitar version of "Sky." Watching the flow of light, listening to the sounds of the sea and the past, and imagining a sky beyond the black ceiling—I felt a sudden, nameless surge of emotion.

Many viewpoints in the venue were attractive: the sand on the floor, the stools on the sand (a very comfortable feeling). After sitting, it was very comfortable and peaceful. I could carefully feel the flower beds on both sides, the projections, and the music. It was peaceful yet helpless (as time passes second by second). I love it very much💕 在場內很多視點都很吸引:地上的沙、沙上的櫈(很舒服的感覺)。
