Traveling Through Songs is a simple yet experimental cultural exchange project, unfolds as an intimate encounter between cultures, carried by two melodies that have travelled across time, geography, and memory. What begins as a simple act—three women gathering around two songs—becomes a meditation on how popular culture moves through the world, how it is inherited, and how it transforms when held by new voices.
Popular songs often feel universal, yet they are rooted in the specific histories that shaped them. A melody that evokes longing in one culture may arrive in another as an unfamiliar echo. A lyric that once held a nation together may be heard elsewhere as a distant story. In this space of difference, the project listens for what can be shared, and what emerges in the act of exchange.
Artist Chi-yung Wong brings together three performers from three cultural lineages:
Dorothea Mildenberger, a German actress;
Zhenhong Song, a Chinese pianist;
and Valeria Iacovino, an Italian pianist.
Together, they inhabit two iconic songs: the German wartime ballad “Lili Marleen”and the Chinese classic “May We All Be Blessed with Longevity” (但願人長久), adapted from Su Shi’s Song‑dynasty poem on distance, reunion, and the shared moon.
In this unfolding dialogue:
Dorothea Mildenberger guides Zhenhong Song through the emotional terrain of “Lili Marleen”, a song that once drifted across military camps and radio waves, carrying the weight of longing, separation, and fragile hope.
Zhenhong Song teaches Dorothea Mildenberger to sing “May We All Be Blessed with Longevity”, a melody woven from poetry that has comforted generations with its wish for enduring connection across distance.
Valeria Iacovino listens, observes, and learns both pieces, becoming a witness to the subtle transformations that occur when music crosses cultural thresholds.
Through teaching and learning, the artists step into each other’s cultural memories. Their voices trace the contours of histories they did not live, yet can momentarily inhabit. The songs become bridges—resonant, fragile, and profoundly human.
Traveling Through Songs is not a reenactment of the past, but an exploration of how the past continues to breathe through music. It asks how popular culture travels, how it is carried by individuals, and how it reshapes itself in new hands. In the shared act of singing, the artists create a small, luminous space of exchange—where understanding grows through breath, rhythm, and the generosity of listening.
《歌渡山川》是一個簡單卻實驗性的文化交流計畫,是一場跨越文化的親密相遇,由兩首穿越時間、地域與記憶的旋律所牽引。三位女子因兩首歌而聚——這看似單純的起點,逐步開展為一場關於流行文化如何流轉世界、如何被傳承、又如何在新的聲音中獲得蛻變的沉思。
流行歌曲看似普世,實則深植於形塑它們的特定歷史。一段在某種文化中訴說思念的旋律,到了異地或許化作陌生的迴響;一首曾凝聚一個民族的歌詞,在他鄉聽來或許成為遙遠的敘事。正是在這差異的縫隙之間,本計畫傾聽那些得以共享的所在,以及於交流過程中悄然萌生的新意。
藝術家王志勇匯聚了三位來自不同文化背景的表演者:
德國演員Dorothea Mildenberger、
中國鋼琴家 Song Zhenhong、
義大利鋼琴家 Valeria Iacovino。
她們共同詮釋兩首經典之作:德國戰時歌謠《莉莉瑪蓮》,以及改編自蘇軾宋詞、寄寓別離與團圓、共嬋娟之願的中文經典《但願人長久》。
在這場層層開展的對話中:
Dorothea Mildenberger 帶領 Song Zhenhong 走入《莉莉瑪蓮》的情感深處——這首歌曾飄盪於軍營與電波之間,承載著思念、離散與微茫的希望。
Song Zhenhong 則教 Dorothea Mildenberger 吟唱《但願人長久》——那由古詞編織而成的旋律,世代撫慰人心,寄託著超越距離的綿長牽念。
Valeria Iacovino 在旁聆聽、觀察、學習這兩首作品,成為音樂跨越文化邊界時那些細微蛻變的見證者。
在教與學的過程中,藝術家們走進彼此的文化記憶。她們的聲音勾勒出那些未曾親歷、卻得以暫時棲身的歷史輪廓。歌曲化為橋樑——共鳴而脆弱,卻飽含人性深處的溫度。
《歌渡山川》並非對過往的重現,而是探索過去如何透過音樂持續呼吸、持續流動。它叩問流行文化如何旅行、如何被人們攜帶、又如何在新的雙手中重塑自身。在共享歌聲的當下,藝術家們創造出一片微光閃爍的交流之境——在那裡,理解伴隨著呼吸、韻律與傾聽的善意,悄然滋長。
