BACKGROUND

‭                           ‬‭            ‬

Exploring Mindfulness & Mental Wellbeing From An Arts-Sciences Perspective

Mindfulness improves mental quality and trains concentration, allowing us to learn about our feelings through a non-judgemental way. In addition, it helps us to further understand the relationship between our own thoughts, emotions and the surrounding environment.

Installation artist Wong Chi-yung explores the relationship between mindfulness and the arts and he believes that there are many intricate similarities between these two. He states that everyone can train introspection and reflection through artistic creation or artistic experience; they can also understand themselves through art.

Chi-yung asks multiple questions: Can the creation of art help us to understand our consciousness and our subconsciousness? Can artistic experience help us understand ourselves? In 2016, he went to Europe alone to discuss the possibility of combining calmness and sensory experiences with Swiss neuroscientists from the perspective of an arts-sciences subject. As an independent artist-curator, he invited a number of art organizations and universities in Europe, the United States, and Hong Kong to collaborate in order to develop exhibitions and art-science research related to arts and mental health.

Through his cross-disciplinary approach Chi-yung explores both theoretically and practically in this artistic venture that acts as a bridge to open up discourse and collaboration between artists and scientists, aiming at promoting dialogue and development between disciplines, generations, and cultures.

A HEAVEN IN A WILD FLOWER

‭                                     ‬‭         ‬

AN EXPERIENTIAL INSTALLATION INSPIRED BY MINDFULNESS

“A Heaven in a Wild Flower” is the second part of Wong Chi-yung’s experiential installation series - “To See A World in a Grain of Sand”. This project is inspired by mindfulness and its related scientific research; a result conveying his artistic research on mindfulness into an artistic creation. This experiential installation combines both theatre arts and technology, creating a contemplative space where the visitors can immerse themselves into a sensory experience with light, music and touch.

“To See A World in a Grain of Sand” was commissioned by the Theatre of Liege in Belgium in 2018 and was selected as one of the funding projects of the European Commission.

“A Heaven in a Wild Flower” is a core project that serves as a bridge to facilitate new dialogues on the topic of “Arts and Mindfulness”, therefore, educational projects and public events are developed with Chi-yung’s collaborators. This exhibition is funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In order to reach audiences from different sectors, Chi-yung collaborates with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in organising workshops, dance performances and an online forum.

INSTALLATION X IMPROVISED PERFORMANCE

This project is an experiential Installation as well as a performance.

In order to achieve the three goals of cross-media creation, cross-disciplinary research, and promotion of education, Chi-yung and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts have co-organised a workshop.  Students are invited to explore the relationship of Movement, Observation, and Introspection, and render the exploration result into a series of dance creations that interact with the installation.  The installation thus becomes their stage.

Using the topic of contemplation as a bridge, students review and explore the possibility and interaction between performing arts and installation arts. Furthermore, students use their improvisation methods to lead the audience to participate and to experience arts using different perspectives. The project introduces how experiential arts can infuse the concept of mindfulness, inspires us to re-understand our visual, auditory and tactile sensation.
